英語中有很多單詞可以表示「牛」，
那麼「牛年」「屬牛」的「牛」
到底應該用哪個呢？
牛年：Year of the Ox
牛年呢，最基本的英語表述是：「Year of the Ox」，對牛的總稱是cattle或是ox，用ox這種總稱一般不會鬧出笑話。
因為英語裡對於不同的牛是有不同的說法的：公牛的英文是bull，母牛則叫cow，小母牛是heifer，小牛或牛犢叫calf，小閹牛為bullock或steer，水牛是buffalo。
時常有同學把牛年翻譯成「Year of the Cow」或是「Year of the Bull」，這樣牛年就成了母牛年或公牛年了。所以，翻譯成「Year of the Ox」應當說不會引起歧異。

指閹割過的公牛（即常用於干農活的閹牛），也可以用來通稱牛，複數形式是oxen。因此「牛年」可以說：Year of the Ox

美 /bʊl/ 英 /bʊl/
是未閹割的公牛，亦指其他雄性動物。西班牙盛行的「鬥牛」就是bullfight，而「鬥牛士」是bullfighter。
我們常說的「牛市」（多頭市場）就是bull market；而「熊市」（空頭市場）則是bear market。之所以選擇這兩種動物，一種說法是在西方古代文明中，牛代表力量、財務和希望，熊則代表抑制狂熱、消化自身、見機重生。
漢語中有「吹牛」一詞，在英語裡就可以用bull，表示「假話，瞎話；胡說」。
People are saying that he stole the money, but that's a bunch of bull.
人們都說他偷了那筆錢，其實那純屬胡說。
bull還更多用於一些比喻意義，比如：
take the bull by the horns 挺身面對困難
We decided to take the bull by the horns and go to court, instead of paying the fine.

美 /kaʊ/ 英 /kaʊ/
指母牛、奶牛，或大型雌性動物（如象或鯨象、鯨、海豹等）。
a herd of cows 一群母牛
milk the cows 擠牛奶
cow也有一些特殊的搭配用法：
have a cow 非常生氣［吃驚］
Pat had a cow because you didn't tell her about the party.
帕特非常惱火，因為你沒有告訴她有關聚會的事。
till the cows come home 長時間地；無限期地；永遠
They stay up and play cards till the cows come home.
他們一夜未睡，玩了很長時間的牌。
此外，cow作為動詞可表示「恐嚇、威脅」。
Dissidents were cowed into silence by the army.
持不同政見者在軍隊的恐嚇下保持沉默。

指菜牛或奶牛，本身就是複數名詞，一群牛可以說「a herd of cattle」；而養牛的牧場可以說「a cattle ranch」。

指小牛、牛犢，也可以指大型動物的仔、幼獸。母牛懷孕可以說a cow in/with calf。
