“Perhaps the mother is getting food," said Mum.

perhaps 就是 “也许/可能” 的意思，
maybe perhaps，都是 “也许” 的意思。
get food 寻找食物。

“But what if the pup is lost?”asked Biff.

而这里的 what if 的意思就是说：如果...怎么办？
“但如果小海豹是迷路了怎么办呢?” Biff 问。

What would the family do?
“Let's wait to see if the mother comes back,"said Dad.
“我们等等看他妈妈是否回来。”爸爸说。
wait to see 等等看，等着瞧
就和我们经常说的那句一样

那，等什么呢？
if 在这里是 “是否” 的意思，
是否妈妈会 come back，会回来。

So the seal pup was in danger.

A seal pup was on the sand.

“But what if the pup is lost?”asked Biff.
