10/22 JFK “Quarantines” Cuba
When: 1962
Where: Cuba
Who:Castro and President Kennedy
What:
In response to the discovery of the Soviet Union’s placement of nuclear missiles in Cuba, 90 miles off the coast of Florida, JFK opted against a full out invasion but a blockade of all ships sailing to Cuba. A blockade is technically an act of war, so it was called a quarantine. It was an act of brinkmanship designed to stop the installation of those weapons without escalating the confrontation into a nuclear war.
Why significant:
The Cuban Missile Crisis is one of the most famous and public instances where the US and USSR came close to launching a nuclear war (World War III). Kennedy’s choice for limited responses and bartering for time so the Soviets to reconsider their options is credited by many as the reason an actual shooting war did not result. The Soviets ultimately agreed to withdraw the offensive missiles.
