What:

Gbedemah, a visiting member of Ghana’s government was refused service at a Howard Johnson’s restaurant in Delaware that had a “whites only” policy. When refused service, the Finance Minister responded with words to the effect that he was of higher social status than any customer there yet refused service: keep the change and the orange juice, but you have not heard the last of this.

Why significant:

When news of the incident got out, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a public apology for the offense which brought a limited amount of embarrassment to the whole country over its racial codes. Gbedemah ultimately joined the President at the White House for breakfast.
