1、梦想
We grow great by dreams
The question was once asked of a highly successful businessman, “ How have you done so much in your lifetime?”
He replied, “I have dreamed. I have turned my mind loose to imagine what I wanted to do. Then I have gone to bed and thought about my dreams. In the night I dreamt about my dreams. And when I awoke in the morning, I saw the way to make my dreams real. While other people were saying, ‘You can’t do that, it is impossible,’ I was well on my way to achieving what I wanted. As Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the US, said, ‘We grow great by dreams.’”
“All big men are dreamers.” They see things in the soft haze of a spring day, or in the red fire on a long winter’s evening.
Some of us let these dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nourish them through bad days until they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.
So please, don’t let anyone steal your dreams, or try to tell you they are too impossible. “Sing your songs, and dream your dreams, hope your hope and pray your prayer.”

One possible version:
The passage is about a successful businessman whose dreams contributed greatly to his success. He emphasized the importance of dreams and suggested that people should have dreams and never give them up.
What is known to us is that a dream is of great importance to one’s growth and success. Once you decide what your dream is, you know where to go, and which way to take.
Now my dream is that I’ll try my best to be the study winner. Now everything I do is close to my dream. I feel life is filled with hope and is colourful, and I have enough confidence to realize my dream. Of course, the path from where you are to where you want to get is not always smooth and straight. Therefore, an optimistic, positive mind is necessary in the process of your seeking your dream.
In a word, only if you have a dream will you have the chance of realizing it.
2、教育
请阅读下面一篇短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
The other day, BBC broadcast its documentary(纪录片)“Are Our Kids Tough Enough? — Chinese School”, in which the British and Chinese teaching styles competed against each other, with both sides tested after four weeks to see who comes out on top.
In this unique experiment, five Chinese teachers took over a British classroom with 50 teenagers aged 13 and 14 in a British school for one month and taught them in a typical Chinese way: no talking, no questions and experiencing the severe classroom discipline within an extended school-hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In the meantime, another group of students were guided in the British teaching style: free talking, free questioning, thinking for themselves and relaxing learning atmosphere.
At the end of the documentary, all the pupils took part in the same exams in a few subjects. Next is the result.
At the end of the documentary, all the pupils took part in the same exams in a few subjects. Next is the result.
Faced with the result, many netizens in Britain made a strong suggestion to their Education Minister that Britain should learn from China and adopt China’s educational style.

Dear Minister,

Yours sincerely
A Chinese senior student
Dear Minister,
I hear that many people in your country are suggesting Britain’s education system should follow china’s after a BBC documentary, which reported a 4-week experiment ending up with Chinese teaching methods defeating British ones. It is said you are collecting opinions from Chinese students. The following is my view.
Personally, I strongly advise you forget Chinese style of education. On one hand, Chinese’ students wining in test scores is in fact at the cost of their creative abilities and autonomy in learning. As a matter of fact, many of my classmates could do nothing without teachers and parents’ help, let alone make great innovations in their later life. On the other hand, we Chinese students are suffering from a severe lack of sleep and good health, all due to the pursuit of a high score in numerous tests. Without a healthy body, nothing is meaningful. Do you really want young Britons to spend 15 to 16 hours a day on study?
Therefore, dear Minister, you should think twice if you decide to follow that suggestion.
3、文化差异
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的短文
1. When in London by tube with mainly English passengers, we tend to sit together in total silence. However, when I traveled in China, people sitting next to me often asked me about my age, salary, and even marriage. They were also willing to introduce themselves as much as possible.
2. On the first day I arrived in China, a Chinese professor invited me to dinner accompanied by his colleagues. After dinner, the professor paid for the meal alone, although the others also offered to pay for it. In Britain, we are accustomed to going "dutch" while eating in a restaurant.
3. One day, at a friend's birthday party, I met with a foreign friend and offered my hand, meanwhile he bowed to me. We were both at a loss for a moment, but soon he seemed to be conscious of something and shook my hand naturally.

Possible version 1 :
The above descriptions and picture show us that cultural differences can be often experienced. People from different countries behave in different ways, for example, interpersonal communication, greetings, and table manners. (30Ws)
Frankly speaking, it’s necessary for us to acknowledge cultural differences. For example, it’s polite for a receiver to open the gift upon receiving it abroad while it’s a different story in China. Unlike Chinese, American people care more about personal space when keeping a conversation with others.
Personally, we can’t highlight the importance of cultural differences enough. People should accumulate as much information about cultures as possible through reading or the Internet, thus avoiding unintentional offense while in contact with people from different cultures, especially in the era of globalization. What’s more, we should bear in mind that mutual understanding and respect matter in the global village, and enjoy a very “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” mentality. (120Ws)
Possible version 2 :
When traveling, greeting and even taking a party in a different country, we easily feel embarrassed. Obviously there exist cultural differences between countries in interpersonal communication, greetings and table manners. (30)
Lots of phenomenon account for cultural differences. For example, Chinese people don’t have the same concept of privacy as Americans do. They talk about topics such as ages or income, which Americans think is annoying. Chinese leave-taking is very short and quick but western people think it’s so abrupt that they haven’t prepared for it. Lacking awareness of cultural differences may cause misunderstanding.

When you are paying upwards of £15,000 a year to have your child privately educated, the big surn of money for extra tuition(学费)may not sit well with you.But that is exactly what seems to be happening. An increasing number of parents look to "top-up" their child's already expensive education with a private tutor.
According to managing director Nevil Chiles of Kensington&Chelsea Tutors, the agency's students tend to fall into two groups. There are those who are struggling with a particular subject and benefit from one-to-one tuition. The second group consists of students who are already excellent but whose parents want to ensure they go on to their preferred school or university.
"We felt Mica needed help with exam technique and we also realized that she did much better one-to-one than in a classroom," explains Bowman, who contacted Kensington & Chelsea Tutors on the advice of a friend who used them for her sons, including one who was attending Eton."Mica has established a good relationship with her tutors and has gained confidence as a result of the tutoring." adds Bowman.

5、目标
请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
How many times have you heard the expression that most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do planning their lives. I would expand that expression by adding that most people spend more time “thinking” about their vacation than they do thinking about what's important in their life.
While rest and relaxation are a must in living a balanced life, it’s not what we were created to do. After all, the Master Creator took his R&R (Rest and Recreation) on the seventh day, only after six days of “definitely directed thought.”
Wallace D. Wattles, wrote “There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and continuous thought; it is the hardest work in the world.” And yet it is the first and primary labor of achievement.
What is your life’s purpose or your personal mission statement? Is it written down? Do you review it and think about it often? Is your life organized around your purpose and a set of goals that support that purpose?
Without purpose and goals — definitely directed thought — you are like the proverbial “ship without a rudder(舵).” There is power in your purpose and in your goals. It is the power that takes you over obstacles, the fuel that pushes you toward the life you expect.

Possible version:
Despite the fact that constructing your future with goals is tough, it does make a difference during the process of your life, as it guarantees your right direction of constant achievements.
Personally, it can never be too true that life can not shine without goals. No matter what you do, so long as you are determined to achieve, goals are necessary.
Everybody has his own goals with no exception of me. Being a man useful to society is my long-term goal. However, at present, to an ideal university is undoubtedly my desire. Few people can survive well unless equipped with abundant knowledge.
In an effort to realize my dream, hard work seems the best and only choice. Not only will I make my study plans in detail, but the most important is to put my plans into real action. Only with great efforts can I attain further education and eventually step into future with great confidence.
6、人生规划

One possible version:
People are supposed to spend more time planning a life than planning a vacation. After all, rest and relaxation should be balanced so that personal achievements can be accomplished. Only with directed thought can one eventually succeed.
Planning life after high school is a must for every graduate. Attending a top university is my initial priority. College life, in my opinion, can help further my studies, and broaden my horizon. A quality education will sharpen my skills leading to even greater successes.
Achieving my goals, of course, needs practical action taken from now on. To prepare for success in college, I have been working extremely hard in high school. I believe I have laid the groundwork to be successful in college and I will direct my thoughts toward accomplishments in both the short and long term future. I strongly believe, with hard work and perseverance, a bright future is surely there for the taking. (153w)
7、努力
It’s always emotional when a sports superstar announces his or her retirement. And when Kobe Bryant, 37, wrote a poem called Dear Basketball to say goodbye to one of the greatest, most fascinating careers in NBA history, the sadness was overwhelming.
Whether competing in the Finals or making jump shots after midnight in an empty gym, he has an unconditional love for the game. When Team USA was training in Las Vegas months before it headed to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, Bryant started his workout at 5:30 every morning in the gym until team practice began at 11:00 am. During each practice Bryant counted every single shot he hit, and he wouldn’t leave the gym until he had hit at least 400.
This kind of hard work certainly paid off. He won an NBA MVP award, five NBA championships with the Lakers and two Olympic gold medals, making him one of the greatest players in NBA history.
【写作内容】

(2) 用事例说明你或你朋友是怎么努力的。
【写作要求】
1. 阐述观点或提供论据时,不得直接引用原文语句;
2. 作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。
One possible version:
The passage above tells us that people generally feel sad at Kobe Bryant’s retirement and that his success results from his love for basketball and years of hard work.
Kobe’s example reminds me that one’s success is based on both passion and hard work. Besides Kobe, other people such as Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs and so on have all proven that perfectly.
When I was a child, I was faced with great difficulty in learning English, especially in vocabulary. Nevertheless, with my English teacher’s patient instruction and help, I kept on practicing. In the end, my perseverance and determination paid off.
“Where there is a will, there is a way”, as the old saying goes. If we are determined to do something, we will find a way of doing it and achieve success. Without perseverance, it is impossible for us to keep trying until our dreams come true.
8、父母教育

One possible version:
As we can see from the pictures, a Chinese father is holding an umbrella for his son, leaving himself wet through. A British father, in contrast, is holding an umbrella for himself in the rain, seemingly showing no special care for his daughter.
The contrast highlights a number of differences in parental care in different cultural backgrounds. Since westerners attach great importance to individualism, parents tend to treat their children as independent individuals and encourage them to experience life by themselves. However, oriental cultures stress the devotion to children.
As to cultivating children’s independence and ensuring the healthy growth, we can gain some inspiration from western parents. Instead of overprotecting children from any danger or failure, we should encourage children to make decisions alone so that they are able to pursue what they want, which can help them go through ups and downs in life. Only in this way can they learn to be independent and develop their surviving skills.
9、电脑与生活
下面一组图片展现了现代生活方式。请根据你对这组图片的理解用英语写一篇短文。

注意:
可参照图片适当发挥;
作文词数150左右;
作文中不得提及有关考生个人身份的任何信息,如校名、人名等。
One possible version:
As is vividly shown in the cartoon, modern life has been dominated by computers. Whether a person is working, studying or playing, he is always staying in front of a computer. Even when he sleeps, what is in his dream is still the computer.
The reasons why modern people are tied up with computers are as follows. On the one hand, there is no denying that the computer is currently the most efficient tool to meet the needs of their work or to entertain themselves. But on the other hand, many people admit that they are too much addicted to computers to maintain face-to-face contact with their friends and colleagues.
Hence, it’s necessary for us to use computers in a reasonable way. After all, the computer is invented to connect you and me, and to bring conveniences to our life rather than set a barrier to keep people beyond reach. (150词)
10、抱怨
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
A peacock was very unhappy with his ugly voice; and he spent most of his days complaining about it.
“It is true that you cannot sing;” said the fox, “but look how beautiful you are!”
“Oh, but what good is all this beauty;” cried the bird, “with such an unpleasant voice!”
“Listen,” said the fox, “each one owns something good; you have such beauty; the nightingale has his song; and the owl has his eyes. Even if you had a sweet voice, you would still complain about another thing. Why can’t you just be happy about what you have already got?”
【写作内容】
1、 以约30个词概括短文的主要内容;
2、 以约120个词就“停止抱怨并珍惜自己所拥有的“这一主题发表你的看法,内容包括:
(1)你或你身边的人的类似事例; (2)谈谈你对该主题的看法。
【写作要求】
1、 在作文中可以自己的亲身经历或虚构的故事,也可以参照阅读材料的内容,但不得直接引用原文中的句子;
2、 文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。
This story is about a peacock who complained about his ugly voice while actually he is very beautiful. A fox advised him to be content with what he was blessed with.
The peacock reminds of my friend Mike, who is always upset. He complained his parents are too busy to stay at home with him, He complains he is too short to play basketball well. But he never realizes that his parents love him so much, and how beautifully he can play the violin, which makes him the envy of his classmates.
Many people around us focus on what they want instead of what they have. As a result of their endless desires, they are often dissatisfied. In my opinion, we should stay positive and value what we have instead of complaining too much. If we remain grateful for what we already have and what we can fulfill, we may live a happier life.
