A long way out in the deep blue sea

在遙遠的藍色大海深處

there lived a fish.

住著一條魚。

Not just an ordinary fish,

這可不是一條普通的魚，

but the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean.

這是大海里最漂亮的魚了。

His scales were every shade of blue and green and purple,

它有著五顏六色的鱗片，就像彩虹一樣，藍的、綠的、紫的,

with sparkling silver scales among them.

還會閃閃發光。

The other fish were amazed at his beauty.

別的魚都特別羨慕。

They called him Rainbow Fish.

他們叫他彩虹魚。

"Come on, Rainbow Fish," they would call. "Come and play with us!"

「來呀，彩虹魚，快來和我們一塊玩吧！」

But the Rainbow Fish would just glide past,

可是，彩虹魚連看都不看他們一眼就走了，

proud and silent, letting his scales shimmer.

還驕傲地閃了閃鱗片。

One day, a little blue fish followed after him.

有一天，一條小藍魚從後面追了上來。

"Rainbow Fish," he called.

「彩虹魚，」他喊道，

"wait for me !

「等等我！

Please give me one of your shiny scales.

求求你了，把你的閃光鱗片，送給我一片好嗎？

They are so wonderful, and you have so many."

實在是太漂亮了。再說，你有那麼多片。」

"You want me to give you one of special scales ?

「你想讓我把我這與眾不同的閃光鱗送你一片？

Who do you think you are ?" cried the Rainbow Fish.

你以為你是誰啊？」 彩虹魚叫道。

"Get away from me !"

「快給我閃一邊去！」

Shocked, the little blue fish swam away.

小藍魚嚇壞了，趕緊遊走了。

He was so upset,

小藍魚很難過，

he told all his friends what had happened.

並把這件事告訴了朋友們。

From then on, no one would have anything to do with the Rainbow Fish.

從那以後，再也沒有魚願意和彩虹魚說話了。

They turned away when he swam by.

彩虹魚一游過來，大家就都把頭扭到了一邊。

What good were the dazzling, shimmering scales with no one to admire them?

即使有一身耀眼的閃光鱗片，卻沒有人讚美，又有什麼用呢？

Now he was the loneliest fish in the entire ocean.

最終，彩虹魚變成大海里最孤獨的一條魚了。

One day he poured out his troubles to the starfish.

有一天，彩虹魚向海星訴苦說

"I really am beautiful. Why doesn』t anybody like me?"

「我這麼漂亮，為什麼沒人喜歡我呢？」

"I can』t answer that for you," said the starfish.

「這我怎麼知道。」海星說

"But if you go beyond the coral reef to a deep cave you will find the wise octopus.

「不過，你要是越過珊瑚礁，游進一個深深的洞穴里，就能見到無所不知的章魚奶奶了。

Maybe she can help you."

她也許能幫助你。」

The Rainbow Fish found the cave.

彩虹魚找到了那個洞穴。

It was very dark inside and he couldn』t see anything.

裡面黑漆漆的，什麼也看不見。

Then suddenly two eyes caught him in their glare and the octopus emerged from the darkness.

黑暗中，突然有兩隻明亮的眼睛盯住了彩虹魚，緊接著章魚遊了出來。

"I have been waiting for you,"

「我正在等你呢。」

said the octopus with a deep voice.

章魚用低沉的聲音說。

"The waves have told me your story.

「海浪把你的事情都告訴我了。

This is my advice. Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish.

我建議你把你的閃光鱗，分給每條魚一片。

You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea,

這樣一來，雖然不是一條最美麗的魚了，

but you will discover how to be happy."

但你會體會到什麼才是幸福，會懂得如何獲得幸福。」

"I can't…" the Rainbow Fish started to say,

「可是......」彩虹魚剛想再說些什麼，

but the octopus had already disappeared into a dark cloud of ink.

章魚已經消失在漆黑的墨汁里了。

Give away my scales?

把我的鱗片分給他們？

My beautiful shining scales? Never.

把這一身閃光鱗分給他們？絕不。

How could I ever be happy without them?

沒有了閃光鱗，還怎麼能獲得幸福呢？

Suddenly he felt the light touch of a fin.

就在這時，不知道誰的魚鰭輕輕地碰了彩虹魚一下。

The little blue fish was back!

原來是小藍魚又來了！

"Rainbow Fish, please, don』t be angry.

「彩虹魚，求求你啦，別生氣。

I just want one little scale."

只要送給我一片最最小的閃光鱗就行。」

The Rainbow Fish wavered.

彩虹魚猶豫起來。

Only one very very small shimmery scale, he thought.

他想，不就是一片小小的閃光鱗嗎？

Well maybe I wouldn』t miss just one.

好吧，反正只送一片，也沒有什麼捨不得的。

Carefully the Rainbow Fish pulled out the smallest scale ,

彩虹魚小心翼翼、小心翼翼地把一片最最小的鱗片，

and gave it to the little fish.

送給了小藍魚。

"Thank you! Thank you very much!"

「謝謝！太謝謝了！」

The little blue fish bubbled playfully,

吥嚕吥嚕，小藍魚開心地吐出了一串泡泡，

as he tucked the shiny scale in among his blue ones.

把閃光鱗貼到了自己那藍色的鱗片當中。

A rather peculiar feeling came over the Rainbow Fish.

彩虹魚的心中湧起了一種奇妙的感覺。

For a long time he watched the little blue fish swim back,

他久久地凝望著小藍魚閃動著的新的鱗片，

and forth with his new scale glittering in the water.

在水裡游來游去。

The little blue fish whizzed through the ocean with his scale flashing,

小藍魚閃動著鱗片在海里這麼一游，

so it didn』t take long before the Rainbow Fish was surrounded by the other fish.

彩虹魚立刻就被別的魚團團圍住了。

Everyone wanted a glittering scale.

大家都想要一片閃光鱗。

The Rainbow Fish shared his scales left and right.

彩虹魚送了一片又一片。

And the more he gave away,

隨著送出的鱗片變多了，

the more delighted he became.

身邊的海水也越來越閃亮。

When the water around him filled with glimmering scales,

當他周圍的海水充滿著發光的鱗片，

he at last felt at home among the other fish.

他就像回到了家裡一樣非常快樂。

Finally the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left.

最後彩虹魚只剩下一片閃光鱗了。

His most prized possessions had been given away,

他把自己最寶貴的東西都分給了大家，

yet he was very happy.

可他卻覺得非常幸福。

"Come on Rainbow Fish," they called." Come and play with us!"

「來呀，彩虹魚，來和我們一起玩！」大家叫道

"Here I come," said the Rainbow Fish,

「來啦！」彩虹魚說著，

and happy as a splash, he swam off to join his friends.

並歡快地朝著朋友們游去了。
