圓明園珍寶十二生肖銅首雕像,與其他很多國寶一起,在1860年被攻入圓明園的英法聯軍掠走。

Twelve animal head statues of the Chinese zodiac are well-known treasures from Yuanmingyuan, or the Old Summer Palace. After Anglo-French troops broke into the Old Summer Palace in 1860, numerous national treasures, including the 12 animal head statues, were taken away.

11月13日,馬首銅像重回北京。澳門收藏家何鴻燊先生將馬首銅像捐贈國家文物局。

On Nov 13, a red bronze horse-head statue returned to Beijing. It was donated by Macao-based collector Stanley Ho and handed over to the National Cultural Heritage Administration in Beijing.

過去70年來,中國政府及很多愛國人士不遺餘力,尋回流失海外的中國文物及工藝品。馬首銅像是圓明園十二獸首中第七尊「返鄉」的銅像。另外五尊獸首包括狗首、雞首、龍首、羊首、蛇首還在搜尋中。

In the past 70 years, the Chinese government and many compatriots have spared no effort to reclaim lost Chinese relics and artifacts from overseas. Due to their efforts, the horse statue is the seventh of the 12 animal statues to be returned from overseas. Now, the search is on for the remaining five: a dog, a rooster, a dragon, a sheep and a snake.

馬上學:英文中可以用hand over表示「移交、轉交」,也可以用turn over to來表達類似含義,例如「I would, indeed, turn the evidence over to the police.(我當然會把證據交給警方的。)」

全國人口普查

國務院11月8日發布通知,我國將於2020年開展第七次全國人口普查。普查將於2020年11月1日開始,不僅包括性別、年齡、受教育程度、職業、婚姻狀況等基本信息,還將包括個人住房狀況等。全國人口普查的數據是制定提升群眾生活水平政策時的重要基礎。

China plans to conduct its seventh national census in 2020, the State Council announced on Nov 8. The census, set to begin on Nov 1, 2020, will not only gather regular information like gender, age, education, occupation, and marriage status, but also individuals』 housing situations, which will give a better picture of the country’s living conditions. The national census will provide data that are an important basis for policies aimed at improving people’s livelihoods.

馬上學:Census表示「統計調查」,區別於survey,census專指人口普查或其他官方進行的與人口相關的調查,除全國人口普查以外還有全國經濟普查(national economic census)、全國農業普查(national agricultural census),而戶口調查員被稱為(census taker)。

禁騎大象

to ban elephant rides

2020年初起,柬埔寨最大旅遊景點吳哥窟將禁止騎大象。每年大約有250萬人來到吳哥窟旅遊,這裡的14頭大象負責其中大部分人在廟宇之間的交通。據柬埔寨《高棉時報》報道,當地時間15日,這14頭大象中已經有兩頭被安置在附近的森林中。2016年,吳哥窟的一頭大象過勞引發中暑,因熱衰竭而死,從而讓吳哥窟對大象的使用第一次引發人們關注

Elephant rides at Cambodia’s largest tourist attraction, Angkor Wat , will be banned in early 2020. More than 2.5 million people visit the site annually, and the 14 elephants at the site transport many of these people between temples. According to the Khmer Times, on Nov 15, two of the 14 elephants have been relocated to the nearby forest. The use of elephants at Angkor Wat first received international attention in 2016, after one overworked elephant died from heat stroke and exhaustion.

馬上學:Ban表示「禁令,取締」,ban sb from doing sth表示「禁止做某事」;也可以做名詞,常見搭配有ban on sth「禁止某事」,to impose/lift a ban「實施(解除)某項禁令」。近義詞有forbid, prohibit, disallow等。
