What：the U.S. declared war on Japan

Why significant：After the Pearl Harbor attack by Imperial Japan on Dec 7, 1941, which killed 2400 people, Americans were stunned, shocked, and angered across the nation. All previous domestic opposition to U.S. entry into the war ceased.

Japan’s allies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the U.S. on December 11. The U.S. responded in kind, and therefore entered World War II. The U.S. was now immersed in a war it would conduct simultaneously in Europe and the Pacific, and it rapidly mobilized for the war.
