課程負責人:王林 教授

上海交通大學設計學院首屆建築學國際專業碩士的城市設計課程,我們嘗試搭建了由具有豐富城市設計實踐經驗的國內外頂尖設計公司負責人與教師共同組成教學團隊,並確立了城市設計課程的教學目標與關鍵內容:一是理解城市設計的本質聚焦城市公共領域的設計,以及如何通過設計提高公共空間的品質、增加城市空間的價值;二是掌握城市設計方法通過指導設計過程的思維邏輯,形成發現問題、設定目標,尋求方案的全過程學習與方法形成。三是通過教學團隊與同學的交互發展出一套教學方法,通過提問、質疑、啟發等多角度思辨性設計討論,激發同學們富有邏輯與推演、目標與使命,活躍與創意的自主思維與設計成果。

For the Urban Design course of the first International Master Program in Architecture at Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design, we have set up a teaching team that consists of the heads of leading domestic and international design firms and teachers with rich experience in urban design practice, while establishing the teaching objectives and key content of the urban design course. The first objective is understanding the essential nature of urban design, focusing on the design of public relationships and the improvement of public space through value-added design. The second is formulating a methodology for urban design, guiding students to master the design thinking process of urban design, by logically identifying problems, defining goals and working out solution through a holistic and methodological process. The third is developing a teaching methodology through the interaction between the teaching fellows and students during practical exercises. Through multi-perspectival and speculative design discussions, we want to urge the students to think and design using their logic, deduction, goals, missions, independent thinking, and creativity.

這是在建築學專業中進行城市設計教學的第一部分課程,教學團隊希望通過設計選題及作業要求,幫助學生髮展對城市及城市設計的理解,尤其是去探索城市多種複雜要素之間的關係,並通過設計操作去學習及掌握這種理想關係建構的過程。我們相信城市公共空間是實現這種理想關係的最重要空間載體,也是本次設計課程的關注重點。

This is the first part of the urban design core studio in architecture. The faculty team hopes to help students develop their understanding of city and urban design, explore the relationships between various complex elements that compose cities, and learn to construct the ideal relationships through design practices and carefully devised design task requirements. We believe that urban public space is the most important vehicle in conveying such critical relationships development, on which the focus of this design exercise will be based.

城市的核心是基礎設施與公共服務,任何支持基礎設施運作來提供公共服務的空間,都應被視為城市公共空間體系的組成部分。城市公共空間的定義因此不應局限於物質屬性的場所,我們對公共空間品質的理解和採取的設計行動,應該要從物理空間向社會空間甚至數字空間拓展並產生有意義的聯結。當城市進入高密度化與數字化階段,空間運作模式的轉型與公共空間持續的拓維,已對當下城市設計形成新的挑戰,同時創造了新的機遇。

With infrastructure and public services making up the core of cities, any space that supports the operation of infrastructure to provide public services should be considered as part of the urban public space system. Thus, the definition of urban public space should not be limited to the physical properties of places. Instead, our interpretation and design actions towards public space quality should expand from physical space to social space, and even digital space, and create meaningful connections. As cities enter the developmental stage of densification and digitalization, the paradigm shift on urban operation and the expanded dimensions of public space have created both new challenges and new opportunities for urban design today.

本次城市設計教學內容,就是聚焦公共空間品質,探討城市設計如何成為一種助力城市創新發展的策略性工具 – 即城市設計的關鍵內容應該是為不同城市要素之間建立理想關係的介面設計,而不是個別獨立的主體設計;城市設計的技術內涵應該是建立一種面向最大化公共利益的空間論證過程,而不是最終設計成果。換言之,我們的教學目標是希望培養學生主動思考及掌握關鍵課題,提出具體的設計目標,和支持這個課題與目標的功能規劃及設計策略,最後以設計方案來表述以上設計過程的能力,藉此來理解城市設計如何引導空間決策,挖掘公共空間的最大價值。

The curriculum of this urban design studio emphasizes the quality of public space and how urban design can be a strategic instrument in enabling and innovating the urban development process. The essential core of urban design in fact should be about the design of interface through which an ideal relationship between different urban elements can be established, rather than the design of individual subjects. The technical content of urban design should reveal the design process that seeks maximum common interest, rather than aiming for a final design proposal as the result. In other words, our goal is to develop students' ability to proactively think and identify key urban issues, to clearly propose design goals supported by correspondent programming and design strategies, and finally to transform and express these processes through demonstrated design solutions, thereby allowing them to understand how urban design can guide critical decisions and maximize the value of public space.

我們以上海盧灣體育中心為基地,以城市公園綜合體的空間策略與設計為題目來進行設計課程,引導建築學科學生去探討「公園」作為一種典型城市公共空間,如何融入建築設計思維來拓展或放大其公共服務功能成為一種創新的城市公園綜合體,藉此拓展建築與城市之間長期以來在尺度、形態、功能等面向所形成的空間解讀,提高學生對公共空間的思考深度與維度,探討公共空間成為一種新建築形式(Public Space As Architecture)的可能性。

We take Shanghai Luwan Sports Center as the site for the design exercise with the topic of spatial strategy and design of urban park complexes, guiding architecture students to explore how "park", as a typical urban public space, can become an innovative urban park complex elevated by integrated architectural design components, through which functions can be reinvented and the impact of an urban park can be amplified. The process is particularly designed to stimulate students』 critical thinking on the inter-relationships between architecture and the city in terms of form, scale, and function. Through exploring both the physical and social dimensions, students can develop their fundamental urban design capabilities in enhancing the quality of public spaces, and explore the possibility of how 「Public Space As Architecture」 can be realized.

基於發現問題,研究問題,解決問題的邏輯,以網格為構架,通過網格的細分設計,從城市空間組合,功能疊代,使用模式,開發與運營模式上提出彈性設計構想。

Through discovering, studying, and solving problems, we use a grid as the base framework and subdivide the grid to propose a non-static design concept in terms of urban space combination, function iteration, usage mode, and development and operation mode.

我們從空間,功能,使用者的角度出發,發現場地複雜性與多樣性,場地的空間與功能需要歸納整理,彈性亟待提升。

From the perspective of the space, function and users, we find that the space and function of the site need to be summarized and re-organized, and its resilience needs to be improved in order to satisfy the complexity and diversity of the site.

設計方案以體育場館設施為核心,從城市肌理、街道網絡、公共空間結構、功能分布、人群、交通組織、地塊及其組合、建築類型等方面進行場地分析,在有限資源與複雜條件下,提升了公共空間品質與社區活力。最終實現核心區域24小時的全民全時段的使用需求。

The design proposal focuses on the stadium facilities and conducts site analysis on urban texture, street network, public space structure, function distribution, target population, traffic organization, plots and their combinations, building types, etc. Under limited resources and complex conditions, the design proposal improves the quality of public space and community vitality, and satisfy the various demand of all people throughout the 24 hours cycle.

上海盧灣體育中心位於上海市黃浦區,黃浦區是典型的上海高密度位中心城區,這裡的人們接觸到的是具有壓迫感、面積少的地面綠化,無法感受到大自然的存在。更面臨著缺少放學、下班後和家人一起交流、散步的城市公共空間。中心城區的蔬果都是通過遠距離運送到達,加重了空氣污染等一些城市病等。一系列城市問題與人們追求的宜居、健康、生態城市願景相去甚遠。

Shanghai Luwan Sports Center is located in the Huangpu District of Shanghai. Huangpu District is a typical high-density central urban area. People here are exposed to oppressive, sparse ground greenery, and little existence of nature. People here also encounter a lack of urban public spaces for communicating with family members and walking during after-school and off-work hours. The fruits and vegetables in the central city are all delivered through long-distance transportation, which aggravates some urban diseases such as air pollution. A range of urban issues makes the area far from being the livable, healthy, eco-city vision that people seek.

盧灣體育中心周邊廣布居民區,居民特徵關鍵詞是「家庭」「學校」「孩子」。基地本身存在著周圍封閉、可達性弱、運動設施單一、人車混行嚴重等問題。人群構成與基地現狀加劇這供需矛盾。

There are a wide range of residential areas around the Luwan Sports Center, and the key words for the characteristics of residents are "family", "school" and "children". The site has problems such as closed boundaries, weak accessibility, singular sports facilities, and intermingling of people and vehicles. The composition of the population and the current conditions of the site increase the discrepancy between supply and demand.

設計概念/Design Concept

本次設計針對以上問題,從城市視角出發,構建「體育+農場」生態圈,著眼於城市品質提升、城市公共空間營造,希望讓「自然」與「生態」融入城市,以激發城市與社區活力。本次設計建築體量充分考慮城市原有肌理,建立了能夠與周邊地塊互動的動態城市「介面」。

In response to the above problems, this design proposal builds a "sports + farm" ecological circle at an urban scale, focusing on the improvement of urban quality and the creation of urban public space, hoping to integrate "nature" and "ecology" into the city to stimulate the vitality of the city and community. The design of the building volume considers the original texture of the city, and establishes a dynamic urban "interface" that can interact with the surrounding plots.

「體育+農場」一共分為三個層級系統,分別是以採摘等體驗活動與露天運動場為主的地面層、以生鮮集市、環形跑道與漫步道為主的12米層、以果蔬種植農場、漫步森林為主的屋頂層。三個層級系統不僅通過漫步道相連,更通垂直電梯相串聯,可達性強。三個層級的體育與農場活動各有側重與特點,營造了豐富且有層次感的公共空間。考慮到城市微氣候,我們在三個層級系統分別種植了季節性植物與蔬果,讓整個基地更接近真實自然。三個系統共同構建形成生態、綠色、宜居生態城市圈。

The 「Sports + Farm」 is divided into three layers: the ground layer is mainly for picking vegetables, other experiential activities, and outdoor sports fields; the 12-meter layer is dominated by fresh markets, circular runway and promenade; and the roof layer is dominated by the fruit and vegetable planting farm for people to wander around. The three layers are not only connected by promenades, but are also connected through vertical elevators. The sports and farm activities on the three layers have their own emphasis and characteristics, creating a rich and attractive environment with mixed-use public space. Taking into account the urban microclimate, the design proposes to plant different types of plants, vegetables and fruits on each of the three levels, and introduces different activities according to the seasons to improve the natural stability of the site and the entertainment for visiting. The three systems with seasonal scenes are jointly constructed to form an ecological, green, livable system eco-city circle.

本次城市設計聚焦於上海盧灣體育中心,在研究城市地塊未來發展問題的同時,試圖關注更多城市的日常生活。在上海高密度的人居環境背景下,日常生活多樣場景使得城市生活更加豐富多彩,但同樣在密度的發展語境下,似乎還有更多城市空間值得關注、值得重新思考他在城市中的價值。

The urban design proposal focuses on Shanghai Luwan Sports Center and daily life in in cities through exploring possibilities of future urban development. In the context of Shanghai's high-density living environment, the diverse scenes of daily life make urban life more colorful, but also drive up the land value of many urban spaces.

本次城市設計的旅途從盧灣體育館出發,調研了基地本身的交通、功能和使用情況後,放眼城市研究範圍,我們在設計中發現城市研究範圍內城市公共空間卻十分稀缺,附近居民的日常生活的街道也比較擁擠,缺乏高質量的公共生活空間,街道的功能似乎只有通行,缺少駐足停留之處。基地附近有紹興路和田子坊等具有歷史特色的建築和街區,此外也有部分公共屬性較強的功能分布在經久失修的建築中。因此我們設想是否可以將部分建築功能和地塊功能進行置換,將這些功能放進我們基地所在的範圍,這樣就會使得城市有了更多公共空間,滿足居民的日常生活休閒和交流需求,同時也能夠增加基地範圍內功能的聚合度,提供更多城市衍生服務。

This urban design process starts with research on the local traffic conditions, functional distribution and on-site usage of the Luwan Sports Center. After careful analysis, we find that there is a scarcity of high-quality urban public space, lack of space for daily interactions for nearby residents, and crowded parking space. Near the site are historical buildings and neighborhoods such as Shaoxing Road and Tianzifang, in addition to some of the strong public functions distributed in buildings that have fallen into disrepair. Therefore, our vision is to replace some of the existing building functions and plot functions and put these functions into the scope of our site, so that the city has more public space to provide for daily leisure activities and residential interactions. This can also increase the aggregation of functions within the site and provide more urban derivative services.

最終,在設計過程中,為了滿足體育功能多樣化,更好服務專業體育需求,同時,也要平衡城市區域居民日常鍛鍊需求,我們在設計中儘可能的增加了體育設施場地的數量,以及增加置換功能的衍生功能,例如置換後的文化出版社,增加了文創藝術中心和藝術展覽館來承接田子坊和紹興路能夠溢出的文化功能。

Finally, in the design process, in order to meet the diversification of sports functions, better serve the needs of professional sports, and at the same time, balance the daily exercise needs of urban residents, we increase the number of sports facilities and venues as much as possible in the design, as well as the derivative functions of increasing the replacement function, such as the cultural publishing house after the replacement, and adding cultural and creative art centers and art exhibition halls to undertake the cultural functions that can overflow from Tianzifang and Shaoxing Road.

在城市設計控制原則上,我們從城市關係、路網、交通等級、功能布局、容積率、建築高度和建築立面等方面都做了詳細的控制,最終提出了我們盧灣再平衡的方案。

基地位於上海市黃浦區老城區中,在城市更新背景下,隨著中國人口結構變化、老年人成為社區配套設施主要使用者,「15min社區生活圈」也應從 「避難式」養老社區設計向 「聚居式」養老社區轉變,進而走向老齡友好型社區。

The site is located in the old neighborhood of the Huangpu District, Shanghai. Under the background of urban regeneration, with the change of China's population structure and the aging people becoming the main users of community supporting facilities, the "15min community life circle" should be transformed from a "refugee-style" retirement community to a "congregation-style" retirement community or even an aging-friendly community.

本次項目設計在保留原有場地體育功能的基礎上,加入「集市」這一復合型商業功能區。集市的主要功能是販賣,但同時也包含有社交、文化、休閒餐飲甚至運動。實際上,集市是某種微觀的城市,是人們日常生活的縮影;故本次設計主要目標為激發場地商業活力、實現周邊社區全年齡共享,打造具有中國特色的「桃源集市」。「桃源集市」 服務於全年齡段人群,但會更加注重適老化。

The design added the 「bazaar」 as a mixed-use commercial area to the existing sports programming. The main function of the bazaar is to sell, but it also includes social, cultural, casual dining and even sports functions. Actually, the market is a kind of micro city, the epitome of people’s daily life. The main goals of the design are to stimulate commercial vitality, realize the sharing of surrounding communities and allow usage by all ages, creating a Chinese 「Xanadu Bazaar」. This bazaar serves people of all ages, but will pay more attention to the aging-friendly.

通過提取集市空間特質,將集市與城市公共空間融合。利用檐下空間引入自然景觀,在實現空間限定的基礎上,進行功能復合,使集市售賣區、兒童活動區、社區棋牌室、茶室、綠地廣場相互融合。創造更復合的空間,多類社會群體可以自在地在場地中活動,避免老年群體「孤島化」。

Based on these characteristics, the bazaar is integrated with the urban public space. Using the space under the eaves to bring in natural landscape, various programs overlap, so that the market sales area, the children's activity area, the community chess and card room, the tea room, and the green space can integrate with each other. To create a more complex space, various social groups can freely play together, avoiding the "isolation" of the elderly group.

同時還將檐下空間應用至田徑場跑道。抬升跑道,實現上下雙跑道空間,上層無遮擋標準跑道服務於體校青年;下部「檐下」跑道,服務於懼怕強烈日光的老年人。

At the same time, we also raised the runway to realize the upper and lower double runway space, so that the space above the eaves and under the eaves can both be used for the field track. The upper unshielded standard runway serves the youth of the sports school; the lower runway "under the eaves" serves the elderly who are afraid of strong sunlight.

經過實地調研和採訪,本次設計延續了盧灣體育中心的功能,主題定為體育伊甸園,希望能成為整個上海最火爆的體育運動公園。我們設置了不同的運動板塊,有流體驗區、賽事區、運動休閒區及康復區以及不同類型的室外活動場地。運動和服務功能的配比為2:1,周到的管理服務是園區的特色之一。公園地面全為人行,地下有一條貫穿南北的支路以緩解肇嘉浜路的交通問題。從地下到地上有完整的豎向交通系統,同時我們新架了一座天橋以連接場地和肇家浜路對面的辦公區,人們可在肇嘉浜路中間綠化帶下,既充分利用了中間面積較大的綠化帶空間又可增加園區人流量。我們希望讓所有到這裡運動的人都能找到自己的一片天地,健康又快樂。

After on-site research and interviews, this design proposal retains the functions of the Luwan Sports Center, while using the theme of Sports Garden of Eden to create themost popular sports park in Shanghai. We have set up different sports areas, including flow experience area, competition area, sports leisure area and rehabilitation area, as well as different types of outdoor activity venues. The ratio of sports and service functions is 2:1, and thoughtful management services is one of the main characteristics of the park. The ground floor of the park is dedicated entirely to the pedestrian, and there is a branch road running through the north and south underground to alleviate the traffic problem on Zhaojiabang Road. There is a complete vertical traffic system from the underground to ground level. At the same time, a new skybridge is designed to connect the site with the office area on the other side of Zhaojiabang Road. People can go under the green belt in the middle of Zhaojiabang Road, making full use of the large public area. The green space can also increase the flow of people in the park. We hope that all people that come to exercise here can find their own world, be healthy and happy.

後疫情時代下,健康至上成為居民最關切的問題。當下城市生活中,居民面臨各種生活壓力,亞健康問題早已普遍,然而除了專業化的醫療方案,極少有人站在城市空間的角度解決此類問題,因此我們團隊希望通過聯繫城市公共空間與亞健康問題,打造一種新的能夠促進健康的場所。

In the post-epidemic era, health has become the most important concern for residents as they have been facing various life pressures and sub-health problems for a long time. However, there are very few places that focus on sub-health issues. By linking urban public space to sub-health issues, our team want to create a new type of place that could promote health.

項目原址作為體育中心,具備獨特的區位和充足的運動功能基礎,,因此將該場地作為健康實現與專業功能結合的場所是具備潛力的。因此我們根據場地現狀分析,在高密度的城市環境下需要釋放更多的公共空間,通過圍合的形式創造出與外界截然不同的領域,同時讓公共空間滲透進建築,混合各類功能,提供多元的健康生活服務。為了方便不同組團之間的滲透融合,設置了天橋系統並與外部城市交通進行聯繫。我們希望以自然要素作為基底,壓力釋放的公共空間作為紐帶,將健康、營養、運動三大實體功能有機整合在本場地。數字化手段的應用為雲上健康管理提供了數據支撐從而實現對概念主題的呼應,打造未來健康公園綜合體。

The site is a sports center with a unique location and an adequate sports function base, so there is potential for the site to be used as a place to combine health and professional functions. Therefore, according to the analysis of the current situation of the site, we need to release more public space in the high-density urban environment, create a distinct field from the outside world through the form of enclosure. At the same time, we let the public space penetrate into the building, mix various functions and provide multiple healthy living services. In order to facilitate the infiltration and integration between different groups, a system of sky bridges is set up and connected to the external urban traffic infrastructure. We hope to use natural elements as the base and the public space for pressure release and the link to organically integrate the three major physical functions of health, nutrition and sports in this site. The application of digital tools provides data support for health management on the cloud, echoing the concept theme and creating a future health park complex.

核心設計2前八周的課題《公共空間導向的建築與城市設計策略》,教師團隊配合默契,通過課程設計、城市訓練簡題和講座三種形式的教學訓練,引導我們理解城市設計的價值以及建立建築與城市設計的關聯。

In the first eight weeks of Core Studio 2, the teaching group of " The Spatial Strategy and Design for an Urban Park Complex " cooperated tacitly. Through the three kinds of training, including studio design, weekly exercises and lectures, the course has helped us understand the value of urban design and the relationships between architecture and urban design.

對我們建築學背景的同學來說,我們在之前對城市設計知之甚少,因此一開始我們遇到了很多困難,如何建立場地和城市的關係,如何創造有價值的開放空間,如何解決需求,如何用建築回應公共空間等,整個八周,這些問題困擾我們,同樣也推動我們,通過老師們課時與課後的耐心輔導,我們最終呈現了我們自己對城市,對社區,對公共空間,對日常生活的思考和理解。

As architecture students with little knowledge about urban design, we encountered many difficulties at the very beginning such as how to establish the relationship between the site and the city, how to create valuable open space, how to solve the needs, how to using architecture to respond to public spaces, etc. During the entire eight weeks, these problems have perplexed us and also pushed us. Through the patient guidance of the teachers during and after class, we finally presented our ideas about the city, the community, the public space, and the daily life.

我願稱之為重構Studio。因為疫情,上課形式的「重構」;設計課題中我們對基地定位、基地城市介面的重構,以及最重要的,對人和城市關係的再思考和「重構」。

I would call it a reconfiguration Studio. Because of the epidemic, the classes have been reconfigured. In the design studio, we reconsidered and reconfigured the location of the site, the urban interface of the site, as well as the relationship between people and the city.

劉泓志老師帶領我們深入場地調研,引導我們把對城市的思考從城市規劃、建築單體設計中脫離出來,指導我們如何把控城市形態,最終指引我們創造能夠應用在城市中的各種實踐,讓每個組,每位同學都收穫滿滿,整個過程令人受益匪淺。

Prof. Liu Hongzhi has led us to conduct in-depth field research, guided us to distinguish our thinking about the urban design from urban planning and architectural design, and helped us to control the urban form. Under his guidance, we have created various design results that could be applied to the site. Every group and every student has learned a lot. Also, the whole process of this core studio has benefited everyone a lot.

前8周的設計課體驗非常棒。劉老師人很好,非常專業並且有耐心。第二節課小組討論方案時直接用硫酸紙手繪進行表達,簡單直觀,使我們吸收知識的效率大幅提高。疫情後上網課也沒有絲毫鬆散。黃老師,孫老師與方老師也十分認真負責,整個教學小組非常稱職。感謝各位老師為我們帶來了一次愉快的設計教學。

The experience of the first 8 weeks of the studio design was great. Mr. Liu is a very nice and patient professional. In the second class, he directly demonstrated with tracing paper during the group discussion. This was very straightforward as a teaching method and greatly improved the efficiency of the knowledge transfer. During the epidemic period, online classes have not slacked at all. Professor Huang, Professor Sun and Professor Fang were also very serious and responsible, and the entire teaching team was very competent. We』d like to thank each professor for leading such a pleasant design studio.

此次課題選取在上海大都市高密度建成環境下的盧灣體育中心街區作為城市更新主題的城市設計課,在8周時間師生的共同努力之下,尤其是在疫情之下,面對絕大多數時間在線設計帶來的挑戰與困難,同學們完成了六組不同主題、豐碩精彩的設計成果,完全實現了城市設計課程的預期教學目標。在此特別感謝劉泓志老師及其帶領下的黃印武、孫詩寧、方安遇教學組的精心教學與全情投入,助教鮑柏江同學的協助,也同時特別熱烈祝賀6組31位同學們的優秀表現、精彩彙報和設計成果!真是太棒了!!!

This studio selected a high-density built environment of the Luwan Sports Center district in Shanghai for the urban design studio with the theme of urban regeneration. With the both efforts of the professors and students, especially under challenges and difficulties of the epidemic, six group students have completed a series of rich and wonderful design proposals within 8 weeks, perfectly reaching the expected teaching objectives of the urban design course. Special thanks to Prof. LIU Hung-chih, and the teaching team of HUANG Yinwu, SUN Shining and FANG Anyu for their meticulous teaching and dedication, as well as BAO Bojiang for his assistance in teaching. 經過短短八周的分組工作歷程,學生們從對城市設計課題的缺乏理解到最終答辯時自信與準確的語言體系,從剛開始生疏的城市空間表述到最後提出了六套思路鮮明、空間邏輯清晰的設計提案,我們相信教學團隊與學生們在這個共同經營的設計過程中得到的收穫與成長,遠遠大於六份總結性的設計成果。

After eight weeks of working in groups, the students went from having a lack of understanding of urban design topics to processing a confident and accurate language system in their final review. They have also progressed from making a rusty representation of urban space at the beginning to the accomplishing six design proposals of distinct ideas and clear rationale. Therefore, we believe that the gains and growth harvested by the faculty and student teams from this cooperative design process are far greater than the sum of these six design results.

不論是建築設計,還是城市設計,都離不開對人的關注、對生活的關注。相較於建築設計,城市設計給了我們另一個觀察社會、感知生活的角度。整個教學架構充滿活力、組織有序,充分展示了同學們豐富的創造力和不可限量的潛力。設計不僅需要有空間,還需要有溫度,希望同學們通過這次學習,可以領悟設計中相通的邏輯,探索靈活、開放的設計觀。

Whether it is architectural design or urban design, it is all about people and their lives. Compared with architectural design, urban design gives us another perspective to observe society and experience life. The whole teaching structure is full of vitality and is well-organized, allowing the rich creativity and unlimited potential of the students to be fully unleashed. Design requires not only space, but also temperature. I hope that through this study, students can understand the common logic in design and explore a flexible and open design concept.

今天,新技術和數字化已經從根本上改變了我們的知識框架、合作模式、社會幹預、和對無形因素的運用。設計可能只是城市生成的眾多因素之一。所以,我希望即使學生們決定在未來選擇與城市設計截然不同的職業道路,他們在這門課程中所採取的跨學科研究方法仍然可以為他們的知識體系提供構架與方法。

Today, new technologies and the digital has fundamentally altered our knowledge framework, mode of collaboration, social intervention, and reception of intangible forces. Design is perhaps only one of many agents through which the urban is produced. Therefore, I hope that even if the students decide to take on a different path in the future, the interdisciplinary research approach that they have taken in this course will still be informative to whatever endeavor they take.

城市設計是關係的設計,是一種將多專業整合在一起的重要工具,建築背景的同學們在探討這種關係設計的課程中,體現出了思維的縝密性、策略的完整性、設計的多元化、成果的細膩度和創意,都讓我感到非常的出色和感動,願這次「大」尺度的設計,能給年輕設計師種下一顆種子,帶著以人為本的設計理念,走向充滿希望的未來。

Urban design is relational design and an important tool for integrating multiple disciplines. During the studio, students with architectural backgrounds have demonstrated meticulousness in thinking, integrity in strategies, and prudence in designs skills. The diversification, the delicacy and creativity of the results all make me feel quite impressed. I hope this "large" scale design can plant a seed for young designers, with a human-oriented design concept, to move towards a new hopeful future.

首先對教學組與評委表示感謝,對在疫情下堅持學習的同學表示感激,特別對學習面臨極大困難的國際學生表示抱歉,但是我們堅信校園終能回歸正常。

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the teaching fellows and the guest jury members. I』m very grateful for students who have endured. This was not an ideal situation, and sorry for international students, especially the great difficulties it has brought to you. But I'm sure one day we will return to the city campus.

另外一點我想強調的是為什麼我們一定要說英語。我們希望同學們能從全世界的資源中各取所需,這個課程的全球性也符合上海這個城市的本質特徵。所以我們把上海作為實驗室,而這個課程充滿了實驗性。正如楊局長的點評,你們的想法、夢想和成果都有可能影響現實世界中正在發生的事情。

There is one more point to make, which is why we all have to speak English. We want you to benefit the most from all the resources from all over the world, and that’s the only reason, the universality of this program, which is also the quintessential character of Shanghai, the city you are in. So we use Shanghai as a laboratory and this program is precisely that. And how wonderful is that we heard from Director Yang that your ideas, your dreams and your work may have an impact on what’s happening in the real world.

最後一點看上去有一點矛盾,一方面你們必將面對市場,正如陳建邦評委所言,當你們離開學校後你們會碰到像他這樣告訴你做什麼的甲方,以及政治和文化等等的制約。你們需要做好準備,具備相應的能力、知識、技巧和工具來面對現實;另一方面,你們還是學生,應當大膽想像,想像力比知識更加可貴,設計的原創性極其重要。這兩者看上去彼此矛盾的卻是一體兩面,這也使得建築專業學生的工作如此迷人。最後,我希望這個課程帶給你們充實的收穫。

And the last point I think it may appear as a contradiction: on the one hand, I want to pay attention to the market, as Albert said, after you leave the school, you will have to deal with someone like him who tells you what to do, as well as politics and culture and other things. We want you to understand the reality. We want you to be prepared to have the ability and knowledge tools to confront with; On the other hand, imagination is more important than knowledge. We all know that the originality of your work is of more importance. And these two things seem to be contradictory. But I think because we have to deal with the two ends of the spectrum that makes the work of architecture students so fascinating. I hope you have enjoyed the studio.

首先對六個小組的精彩成果表示祝賀!同學們風華正茂,即將來臨的時代是中國減少碳排放和實踐可持續發展的關鍵時期,也是未來所有設計中的重點,極具挑戰性,而同學們將是這一過程的關鍵人物並將面臨更複雜的設計條件。

Firstly, I would like to congratulate 6 group for their wonderful work. All our students are early 20s』. I think it is very important that idea of carbon reduction of sustainability will be integral part of any design. This is a very challenging goal. Our students are determining whether we will succeed or not.

同學們以自己的方式討論城市設計,並在設計中給出了不同的闡釋,這非常好。有一點我想強調的是關於城市特徵。我想強調對這個題目選定的區域,其實有大量體現城市特徵的歷史與故事。所有的設計都可以通過深入的討論和分析受益匪淺。不僅僅是因為文脈,為什麼不考慮保留一部分建築呢?新建築由於使用水泥和鋼這些材料的碳排放而變得高碳。另外,同學們現在在學校里做研究設計是非常奢侈的,畢業後會面對市場的影響,受到很多制約,難以實現理想的設計,但是千萬不要放棄探索可持續發展的機會和可能性。我認為我們不是在尋找完美的設計,而是尋找探索的可能性。

Students have discussed the urban design in their own way and made different interpretation, which is very nice. Maybe one thing we can talk about more is urban character. What I want to emphasize is this specific area of the study, which have lot of history and ideas of the urban character. All design could benefit if there are more discussion and analysis around the urban character of the context. Beyond context, I would say why not save any building? New buildings are most carbon intensive, because concrete and steel are main carbon emitters. In addition, I think you are offered luxury for being in a research lab in school. After graduation, students will face the influence of the market and are subjected to many constraints, making it difficult for them to achieve an ideal design. But they still should not give up the opportunities and possibilities for exploring sustainable development. I don』t think we are looking for a perfect design, but rather opportunities to explore.

這個課程設計最大的挑戰來自於尺度。城市設計的多層次設計思維與本科階段專注與單一的層次非常不同。城市設計需要運用多學科來進行更廣泛的思考,獲得更廣泛的視角。這有助於我們從不同的視角觀察事物,和在變化的城市中發現機會的能力。將來,城市空間的發展對城市設計思維的要求更加精密,關聯度更高,更關注空間質量和環境質量,而不是像以前那樣只關注數量。我認為通過設個設計把不同的學科結合在一起是一種非常好的契機。

The most challenging part of this course design comes from the scale. Multiple-disciplines design thinking in urban design is very much different from the undergraduate which focuses on a single discipline. Urban design is involved in grouping or overlapping multiple disciplines together that allows for a broad range of thinking that can be applied to a very broad scale. This allows us to look at things through different perspectives and identify opportunities that are potential in changing cities. In the years ahead with the next generation of maturing development that is more sophisticated and more articulated to urban design thinking and the quality of space and the quality of the environment as compared to the quantity that maybe we』ve had in the past. I think the ability to bring all the disciplines together through these projects is really a great opportunity to develop skills.

I was so impressed about the work. The topic of rethinking the publicness of architecture through urban design is such a great topic for the architecture students, to rethink of the strategy, and also to adapt to a new mindset from designing individual buildings to form different relationships with the buildings in the surrounding communities. The public space helps to improve the daily life of the city and provide social activities such as culture, entertainment, sports and recreation in various forms. Charming, vibrant and attractive cities can always provide residents with high-quality public spaces. The students』 wonderful presentations, great ideas, and impressive graphics, especially in the special period of lock down, it is very difficult to achieve such results.

首先感謝上海交大設計學院選擇黃浦的地塊作為研究生設計題目,為地塊未來的發展提供了有益的參考。六個組的設計反映了同學活躍的思維,很受啟發。由於設計任務書具有一定的開放性,六組同學的分析深入、全面、各有側重,設計的呈現也非常精彩。幾位評委也給出了很好的點評,對於同學今後的設計也是重要的提示,特別是設計課題和實際項目的差別。作為一個規劃管理者,希望同學們將來加強對市場反饋和社會需求、土地價值增長、開發企業能力,以及管理部門的要求關注,實現一個綜合的平衡。

First of all, I would like to thank the Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design for choosing the Huangpu site as a design topic for graduate students, which provides a useful reference for the future development of the site. The designs of the six groups reflect the active thinking of the students and are very inspiring. Due to the openness of the design assignment book, the analysis of the six groups of students was in-depth, comprehensive and focused, and the presentation of the design was also very exciting. Several judges also gave good comments, which are also important hints for students』 future design, especially the difference between design topics and actual projects. As a planning manager, I hope that students will pay more attention to market feedback and social needs, land value growth, ability to develop enterprises, and requirements of management departments in the future to achieve a comprehensive balance.
