這個詞組最早使用在球類運動之中，教練經常會提醒運動員「keep your eye on the ball」，也就是讓運動員把注意力集中在球上，以獲得最佳表現。現在就引申為「做事內行；機警的；有見識的」。

on the bottle
on the bottle是習語，意思是「愛喝酒」、「貪杯」。
He was on the bottle for three years.

on the carpet
舊時人們在商討會議時，會議桌上通常都有個毯子，所以提到這個短語，多半都是處於會議中，由此引申出「在考慮中；受訓斥」的意思。
