英語詞組at hand、on hand、in hand 這三個詞組都含「在手頭」、「在手邊」的意思，雖然它們用法區別甚微，只是側重不同而已，但是卻給很多學了多年英語的本科生，碩士畢業生，甚至英語老師帶來了不少困惑，這節微課後各位親就不再糾結了。
一、in hand 側重強調手中掌控的的物或事，隨時可用，隨時可做（in one's possession ready to be used or done），也可表示手頭正在進行的事。所以 in hand 除了表示「在手頭」、「在手邊」的意思外，還可表示「控制中」或「在進行中」。
「在手頭」、「在手邊」。
1）After I paid the bill, I had only 10 dollars in hand.
付完帳單後，我手頭只有10美元了。
2）Keep your attention on the matter in hand.
把注意力集中在手頭的事情上。
3）The matter in hand is urgent and we must deal with it right now.
手頭的這件事很緊迫，我們必須馬上處理。
「控制中」，相當於under control 的意思。
1）Don』t worry about it. The situation has been well in hand.
不用擔心，局勢已經控制住了。
2）Can you have the situation well in hand?
你能完全控制住這種形勢嗎？
3）The matter seems to be subtle, and is hard to have it in hand.
這件事似乎很微妙的，現在還很難掌控。
「在進行中」。相當於 under way 的意思。
1）He reported that a sudden breakout of fighting was in hand on the border.
他報告說，邊境上突然爆發的戰鬥在進行中。
2）We should finish the work we have in hand before we begin something new.
我們在開始新工作之前，必須完成我們手頭正在進行的工作。
3）The judge would not admit the testimony, ruling that it was extrinsic to the matter in hand.
法官不接受此項證詞，裁定它與正在審議的事無關。
4）While a play was still seek, other preparations were already in hand.
劇本雖還沒有確定，但其它準備工作就已經著手進行。
二、at hand 有二個基本用法：
「在手邊」、「在附近」；
「即將到來」。常用 close、near、 ready 前置修飾之。
「在手邊」、「在附近」，側重強調就在手邊、近處，隨時可用之，含有:
have something easy to reach，which can be used if needed 的意思。在句中可作狀語、補語或後置定語。
1）Whenever I want to write something, I always have a dictionary (close)at hand.
每當我想寫點什麼，我總在手邊放一本字典。
2）When he goes out on business, he likes to have his secretary (ready) at hand.
他出去談業務時，總喜歡他的秘書在身邊。
3）I want you to be at hand during my interview with the journalists.
我接見記者採訪時希望你在跟前。
4）The judge would not admit the testimony, ruling that it was extrinsic to the matter at hand.
法官不接受此項證詞，裁定它與眼下審議的事無關。
5）The students reside in various boarding-houses near at hand.
這些學生住在附近各個寄宿宿舍里。
6）They built a small hut by using the materials close at hand.
他們利用附近的材料建造了一個小棚屋。
「即將來臨」、「在眼前」，在句中一般用作連繫動詞 be 的表語。
1）The athletes are busy training, for the school sports meeting is (near) at hand.
運動員們正忙於訓練，因為學校運動會即將到來。
2）Although the end of the term was (close) at hand, Jenny had not completed all of the projects he had hoped to finish.
學期結束就在眼前，可是珍妮還沒有完成他希望完成的課題。
3）As the storm is close at hand, many ships began to sail back to the port.
眼看風暴即將來臨，許多船隻開始駛回港口。
4）Realizing that his retirement was near at hand, he looked for some additional income.
意識到即將退休，他尋了些事可有些額外收入。
三、on hand 有三種基本用法： 「在手頭」、「在手邊」；
「即將來臨」、「在眼前」；
「在場」、「到場」。
「在手頭」、「在手邊」，側重強調手頭「現有的」或「已備的」，隨時可
用之。含有: something is already available to you or in stock and able to be used if needed 的意思。
1）I always like to keep a certain amount of money on hand.
我總愛在手頭保留一定數量的錢。
2）The shop has a large stock of the new types of mobile phones on hand.
該商店現有大批新型手機出售。
3）Berkshire always keeps at least $20 billion cash on hand for unforeseen events or investment opportunities.
伯克郡公司總是在手上保持200億美金已備突發事件或投資之需。
4）He has too much work on hand to go picnicking with us.
他手頭的工作太多了，不能跟我們去野餐。
5）We have nobody on hand to repair your car.
我們現在沒有人能修你的車。
6）We will have some experts on hand to give you any help you need at all times.
我們將有一些專家隨時能給你們所需要的幫助。
「即將來臨」、「在眼前」， 含義與at hand有些貼近，但用法不同，
at hand '常同連繫動詞 be 的一般式連用，而 on hand 則需用於將來時態。
1）Soon school will end and summer vacation will be on hand.
學校不久就要放假了，暑假快要來臨了。
2）Recent economic performance suggests that a major crisis will be on hand.
最近的經濟情況表明一場大的危機就在眼前
3）They felt that the total destruction of the scheme would be on hand.
他們感到這一計劃徹底失敗的時候就將到來。
「在場」、「到場」。
1）Worldwide English broadcasters were on hand to describe the event as it happened.
國際英語廣播員到現場直播了這一事件的始末。
2）More than 100 police and 120 civil protection volunteers were on hand in case of incidents.
為防止發生事故，活動現場安排了100多名警察和120名民防志願者。
3）Blake's secretary is always on hand when he appears in public.
布萊克出現在公眾面前時，他的秘書總在場。
4）Be sure to be on hand early at the party so that you can make the acquiantance with other guests.
晚會你一定要早點來，以便結識一些其他來賓。
5）He had sweated over every innovation ever made there, and had always been on hand at the most critical times.
