例：It's hot today ,but it was hotter yesterday.
今天很熱，但是昨天更熱。
She is beautiful ,but her younger sister is even more beautiful .
她很美，但他妹妹更美。
以上例句中的hotter、more beautiful及better均是形容詞的比較級。
例：Today is the hottest day of the year .
今天是今年最熱的一天。
She is the most beautiful girl in her class .
她是班上最美的女孩子。
He is the best student of all .
他是所有學生里最棒的。
以上例句中hottest、most beautiful、best均屬形容詞的最高級，與定冠詞the連用。
由上可知，形容詞的比較等級有兩種：一為比較級，一為最高級。
