under,below,beneath,underneath這4個都能表示「在……下面」

這幾個單詞意思相近，分清它們之間的區別很有必要。

「Under」是使用最多的（the most popular）。

「Below」的使用頻率大約是「under」的四分之一。

「Beneath」的使用頻率大約是「below」的二分之一。

「Underneath」的使用頻率不足「beneath」的二分之一。

一、Under

一般來說，「Under」是默認選擇。因為在大多數情況下，你都可以用「under」替換其他三個單詞。

▌與「below」相比，「under」描述的多為三維物體。例如，

說桌子下有某物或書下有某物時，你就可以說「something being under a table, under a book」。

▌「Under」同樣也可以用來表述有層次的事物（layers）：

I have on a t-shirt under my jacket.我上衣裡面穿著T恤。

▌「Under」也可以用來修飾數字（numbers）：

與「under」相比，「below」經常用來描述在同一平面上的（on a flat plane）物體。

如兩張掛在牆上的照片，你就可以說其中的一張是「below」另一張。

▌「Below」可以用來表示某事物的程度（level ），如溫度：

It's supposed to drop below freezing tonight.今晚溫度會降到零下。

▌「Below」的反義詞是「above」。

三、Beneath

▌「Beneath」比「under」更正式，例如：

In the unlikely event of an emergency water landing, you may find a flotation device beneath your seat cushion.如果發生水上迫降的緊急狀況，你可以在座位下方找到一套漂浮設備。

▌「beneath」也有被某物「覆蓋」（being covered ）的意思：

beneath the blankets毛毯下面

beneath the surface of the water水面之下

▌「Beneath」也可用來表示隱藏在某人行為或決定下的真實情感。

Beneath it all, he still loves her.掩蓋這一切的是他依然愛著她。

▌在人際關係方面，「being beneath someone」含有負面意義。「things or people that are beneath you」是指那些不如你，配不上你的人或事。相比於你的社會地位來說，他們地位有些低下。

She acts like some kind of princess, like we're all beneath her.她做事兒就像一個公主，就像我們都不如她一樣。

四、Underneath

「Underneath」給人一種更隨意，更形象的（casual and expressive）感覺。當你想強調某物體的位置時，你可以用「underneath」代替「under」。

A: You found it! Where was it?A:你找到啦！在哪來啊？

B: It was underneath the sofa.B:就在沙發下面。

Think of 'underneath' as a more emotional, exciting version of 'under'.把「underneath」想像成更富有感情色彩的「under」就比較合適。
