中文裡，我們常把膽子很小的人稱作「老鼠」，把笨手笨腳的人稱作「笨豬」，把頭腦愚蠢的人稱作「蠢驢」。雖然不太禮貌，但也比較形象，其實英文也一樣，也有用動物名來形容某些人的情形，比如下邊介紹這三個。
1、crab 螃蟹 （脾氣暴躁的人）
螃蟹有許多腿，還有一對很厲害的鉗子。大概是由於它的相貌，人們都認為它是一種性情急燥、容易動怒的動物。正因如此，美國人把那些性格暴燥，脾氣很壞的人稱做crab。
比如，有學生把老師叫做crab，特別是當老師要執行學校規章制度的時候：
I don't like any of my teachers much，but the one I hate the most is Missus Gray. She's such an old crab，always scolding us for making noise，chewing gum，not doing our homework.
所有的老師我都不太喜歡，但是，我最恨的是格雷小姐。她真是只老螃蟹，老罵我們不安靜、吃口香糖、不做家庭作業。
又如：
My neighbor is such an old crab. He practically does not allow me to listen to music and watch TV. Whenever I turn on my radio or television set，he knocks on my door and angrily orders me to stop.
我的鄰居可真是只老螃蟹。他不讓我聽音樂和看電視。每當我打開收音機或電視機，他就會來敲我的門，怒氣沖沖地要我把它們關掉。
2、shrimp 蝦 （個子矮小的人）
大約八百年前，shrimp這個詞是用來指那些個子矮小的人，後來人們才把蝦稱為shrimp。基於這個原因，現在仍有人經常稱個子矮小的人為shrimp。
Basketball is a game for tall people. But once in a while a player like Tyrone Bogues comes along. Tyrone Bogues is a real shrimp–only 1.6 meters tall. But he's so quick and clever he can play on equal terms with all those giants.
籃球是適合高個子人的運動。可是偶然也會出現像格西·博格斯這樣個子矮小的球員。格西·博格斯體格實在是矮小，身高只有一米六，但是他機智靈活，和那些個子高大的球員一樣地打球。
The great French leader Napoleon was shorter than everybody around him，so you'd have to call him a little shrimp. But for a shrimp，he certainly made the rest of Europe tremble.
法國偉大的領導人拿破崙比他周圍的人都矮，所以你可以說他像只小蝦。但是作為一隻小蝦，他卻震憾了整個歐洲。
3、turkey 火雞（愚蠢的人）
美國人喜歡吃火雞，每逢感恩節和聖誕節，火雞總是家家戶戶節日盛宴的主菜，人們甚至把感恩節稱為「火雞日」。大多數人認為火雞不僅難看，而且笨頭笨腦的，所以常把某人叫做turkey，等於說那個人無能、很笨。
I wouldn't go out on a date with Mary if she was the last woman in the world. She's such a turkey with that boring personality and stupid grin.
即便在世上找不到其他女人，我也不想約瑪麗出去玩。她那性格讓人討厭，還有她那傻笑，她就是個笨蛋。
This man came with a good recommendation from his last job，but it turns out he's just a turkey who simply can't do anything right！
這個人來的時候，他原來的公司給他寫了不錯的推薦信。可是，他原來是個笨蛋，什麼都做不好。
